Sing some strange verse from some strange song of vines.
A summary of my life lately:

- Obsessing over Bank of America's "Keep the Change" program. I've been substituting using my check-card instead of cash lately on all purchases in order to reap maximum rewards. And when I fill up my car I top off to .01. (I just realized that I should be getting gas and doing this EVERY DAY instead of once a week.)

- Saving money. It's kind of addicting to put money into savings. I want to try and live a more frugal lifestyle, except, I don't want to make too many sacrifices. So we'll see how that goes.

- Checking my credit score. From 0 just 18 months ago to 686! This doesn't mean much right now, but I'm planning for the future when it comes time to get a loan and buy a home. At the moment I have zero debt, and I just got a couple of credit-line increases so I'm up to $3000 in credit spread across three cards. Fiscal responsibility for the win! (For now, at least. I'm definitely going to start using up some of that credit for plane tickets and to fix my car.)

- Watching Law & Order: SVU or Criminal Intent every single night. As much as I love detectives Goren (<3<3<3 Vincent D'Onofrio forever) and Eames, I've really started warming up to Logan and his rotating cast of partners. I think Wheeler's my favorite so far.

- Clipping coupons. Saving money on things I already buy just makes so much sense.

- Learning to cook. This is a pretty big deal for me. I've only made two meals in two weeks (shrimp pasta and sausage pasta), but that's two more meals than I made in all of 2007. (and 2006, and 2005...) I'm starting to get the hang of making pasta (which is to say, I can boil water), but I want to try and make other things too. I finally dusted off the four cookbooks I own; cooking's not as scary as I thought. (But what I really want to make is SHAKE N' BAKE and HAMBURGER HELPER.)

- Reading supermarket circulars for what's on sale.

- CURLING UP ON THE COUCH IN MY SLANKET!!!! I was going to get this for Lindsey for Christmas, but they were SOLD OUT, so I decided to get this for her another time. Turns out she tried to get me one for Christmas too, and I just got it last week. Still, the dream of his n' hers Slankets is still alive. (Okay, I know I look like a complete tool in my Slanket, but it's perfect for the cold and dreary weather we've been having.)

Man, and you guys thought my life wasn't a non-stop party anymore!

I could not stop laughing when I saw the picture in SkyMall of a guy in a Slanket, sitting in the bleachers at some game. I feel like Slankets aren't meant for public viewing.

Woah there pardner. I suppose it's a good sign that you've posted this, but the thought of YOU cooking any kind of seafood scares me. You did after all BOIL the sausage the other night. Haha. But hey, gotta start somewhere!

Also, Hamburger Helper is SUPER easy! Ask Kelly or someone to show you how? But uh, Hamburger Helper ain't the best for ya.

Also, I hate that you own a Slanket. Mostly because I want one. It's not even that cold there! Our highs haven't been in the 50's until today! How cold and wet?! Ugh! Winter!

Also, you only like Wheeler because she's SUPER CUTE. I really can't stand Falacci, I'll be glad when she's gone. But I really liked Barek -- she was like a less-weird, female Bobby Goren. She knows like 10 languages and all this weird shit. I like the smart ones!

But dude, since I've seen every episode of CI EVER, I've been watching a lot of SVU but I think I've maxed out on that too. The episodes are all repeating. I gotta move over to just straight L&O.

OMG! A comment for every subject!

There are a LOT of really easy things to cook besides pasta. Also, nothing about Pasta & Shrimp or Pasta & Sausage or Hamburger Helper or Shake 'n' Bake screams FRESH VEGGIES at me. You gotta eat that, man!! The freezer section has made it HELLA easy -- with single serving, microwave steam packets. Just go easy on the corn, starch-man.

so, uh, this is pretty much my life. i'm also like 6 years younger than you, so it's even more hilarious.

i do have to admit that i find this post really adorable. i do most of the above things: clipping coupons, checking sales, and so on. people laugh, but i saved $32 last time i went to the grocery store! $32!!!! i am kind of awesome, really.
also: cooking is fun! read some cooking blogs, too. i'd recommend some, but they're all veg ones. don't be afraid to experiment. and also don't be afraid to halve recipes and/or freeze leftovers.

i wonder if i can convince richard to get me a slanket for valentine's day.

Alethea's been on a cooking streak the last couple of weeks; trying out a bunch of new stuff.

This was one of the better things we had recently. Robert Rodriguez's 10 minute cooking school for for Puerco Pibil(pork and stuff). It was super yummy.

In fact, we had left overs and used it with his Breakfast Burritos. They were mega-yummy too.

here's a beginner recipe

I make this at least once per week...

Super easy "fried rice"
Cut up some chicken into bite-sized chunks.
Cook in a skillet with peanut oil (add garlic or ginger for extra delicious flavor).
Remove chicken from pan.
Cook up a scrambled egg or two.
Use a spatula to cut the egg into pieces.
Put chicken back in pan.
Add vegetables (already cooked in handy microwave pouch).
Add rice (tip: buy a rice cooker).
Add soy sauce and mix it up for a few minutes.

I even made this the other night without chicken... still delicious! And it only took 15 minutes to make!

I am the queen of lazy cooking, i.e., casseroles. I have this Southern Living Cookbook Annual from 1979 that is my bible. And now I've discovered Justslowcooking.com! It's all crock pot recipes. So I can be even more lazy.

But casseroles are a great way to get a bunch of things into one dish and not having cook things separately. Plus, easy clean up!

I tend not to experiment with things (other than like, soup, spaghetti sauce and stuff like that) because that is usually a failure. But I did alter this recipe for rice to include cilantro and I make it whenever I make tacos.

If you want any good casserole recipes or my cilantro rice recipe, let me know!

Man, how ADULT are you?

I was a latch-key kid so I started cooking real early. Jar pasta was the first thing I learned how to make, then I graduated to using cans of tomato sauce and paste. I also when through a big Shake N' Bake period. It was all about making good food to watch "Transformers" and "Voltron" and "Robotech" to.

I boil the sausage for like 5 minutes to make it easier to slice and make it a bit leaner, then I sautee in olive oil and maybe chili flakes or chopped oiled sun-dried tomatoes. Works like a charm.

The Slanket is rad because it makes you look like a monk, a very warm and chilled out one. I'll stick to my wool socks and sweaters though.
