Scared straight.

I saw these anti-meth ads a while back and meant to post about them, but I forgot. Somehow meth came up in conversation recently and I mentioned these ads and promised to post them, then I forgot about it again, and then I remembered just now. My brain has been all over the place lately. I think by now we've all seen examples of "meth-face" and know that it's not a very glamorous drug. But just in case you were still on the fence and considering giving it a shot, these ads should persuade you to reconsider. So, good job, Montana Meth Project.

Anyway, here are the rest of them. They're pretty graphic; some of them are kind of darkly hilarious, but mostly they're really, really depressing -- I really can't deal with the one with blood. Montana, though. I never figured "the Treasure State" as being a hotbed for meth activity, but then again, I couldn't even name a single city in the state, so I obviously don't know anything.

I do know that they're way more effective than the Me Not Meth ads that are up all over West Hollywood. These ads look like a Mentos commercial by comparison.

The best anti-meth campaign was that one in the 80s with the sing-songy "Meth Meth Meth!" while the girl was scrubbing the bugs off the walls...

I don't remember that at all, probably because I was too young and naive. I tried finding it on YouTube, but I really didn't know what I was looking for.

Your last line is, like, so poetic. It should be the title for From Tokyo To London's debut album!

No, the junk states have a serious meth problem. I believe the state with the most meth production is Missouri.

Butte, Montana

I just got back from a month of fieldwork in Montana and although I didn't witness it first hand, I met more than one person who had lost a friend (so to speak) to meth. Lots of cars have anti-meth stickers all over them, and the small-ass town I was staying in had more than one of those billboards up. If you're not into the outdoors, I can see how that state would be boring as hell.

However, I did think this was sorta funny:

some point during the late 90s (omg, i have been driving for 10 years! what a strange realization!), i heard this song on the radio:

it really struck me, and i only recently (strange coincidence on the meth front!) found it again. i thought it was such a strange notion - that having the cleanest house on the street would be a primary concern for a meth addict. but therein exists the irony, i guess.

There've been a lot of really intense awareness campaigns lately. Between this and Aides, I've been pretty impressed with the balance of shock value and reality.

I don't really think the meth issue in Montana is much worse than other states, but this campaign has really brought it to light whereas some other states choose to just ignore the problem or selectively toss up some ads in a few target areas.

ok, i haven't even clicked the ads yet because i'm more disturbed you know nothing about montana!! DUDE YELLOWSTONE is there!! Custer's Last Stand! COLIN MELOY.

Ugh, I totally love Montana and I'm totally moving buying a home there one day. Preferably, on the western end where it's all mountains, not plains. Oh, man, Glacier Nat'l Park? You are missing out.

Thanks! God, I'm so glad you pointed that out. I can't believe I was leaving false impressions on the internet!

Sorry, Michael, I guess the 5% of Yellowstone that's in Montana doesn't make up for the fact that it's a meth state. We should just blow it up.

HAHA METH FACE

i have had friends on meth and they are scary people. their eyes are completely empty. it really is a harsh drug. someone close to me tried it a few weeks ago and i instantly knew they were on it. they haven't done it since and promised not to, but i am reconsidering their role in my life. i will not tolerate it. it's disgusting.
